Said to be the Lexington of Texas, Gonzales is the county seat of the county of the same name and, according to the 2020 census, has 7,165 residents. The city is the originator of the ‘Come and Take It’ flag from the War for Texas Independence from Mexico, and the proximity of Eagle Ford Shale is expanding the economy through oil workers. Gonzales County was established in 1836, has a population of 19,653, and is near the greater Austin-San Antonio area.

The Gonzales Confederate Square has a long and interesting history. It began development in 1825 as Market Square but was named Jail Square when it finished in 1832. In 1909, a Confederate memorial was built in the square to honor the deaths of Confederate soldiers, leading to it being renamed Confederate Square. Although the monument remains, the square was recently renamed Independence Square.

Guerra Grill & Catering serves the best chicken-fried steak in the city. With friendly, efficient service and a large selection of dishes, the family-style restaurant is an unparalleled experience. The catering services are also fantastic. La Bella Tavola Italian Grill & Pizza is a spacious, grand place with excellent food. Full of vibrant, delicious flavors, the bright restaurant features great service and amazing food, from the fresh, hot garlic rolls to the unique meals.

Boasting attentive and friendly service, Come and Take It Bar & Grill features huge serving sizes, delicious food, and a great environment with multiple large TVs. The full-service bar has friendly, fast servers and great whiskey. All the food is scrumptious, whether the fresh salad, the grilled shrimp, the ribeye steak, or the best fajitas in the area.
 

Things to Do

Along the edge of the river and off Highway 183, Independence Park has many features and activities its guests enjoy. There is something here for everyone, from sports fields and a swimming pool to picnic areas and covered pavilions to hiking and biking trails. Above all, it boasts a nine-hole golf course, which is challenging and beautiful.

J.B. Wells Arena and Park covers 169 acres and plays host to many community events all year round. Some of these events include 4-H days, concerts, and many equestrian shows, such as barrel races, rodeos, cutting horse events, and more. The arena can seat 1,800 people and is available both for renting for a private event and as a place to ride during the day.

A place to honor the people who gave their lives at the Alamo, Gonzales Memorial Museum is an art deco-style complex. Displays include rifles, cannons, ammunition, uniforms, artifacts, household goods, photographs, and more. The museum has two wings and two indoor murals depicting the state’s culture and history.

Palmetto State Park is an ideal place for camping, birding, and hiking. Providing a tropical ambiance only an hour from big cities, the park has multiple water sources, a vast number of plants and animals, and many trees. Guests can canoe, swim, fish, or tube in the river, hike or bike through the trails, study nature, and much more.
