Considered to be the birthplace of Texas ranching, Goliad is a centrally-located town in the county of the same name with a population of 1,620 as of 2020. A part of the Eagle Ford Shale region and only about an hour from San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Corpus Christi, the city has a rich history and sits along the San Antonio River. Goliad County was listed at 7,012 people in the last census. It was founded in 1836 and is named after Father Miguel Hidalgo.

The oldest town in the state and the county seat of the county, Goliad, was established by the Spanish in 1749. Due to its proximity to Matagorda Bay, it was named La Bahia until 1829, when it was renamed. Goliad is an anagram, without the ‘H,’ of a Mexican Revolutionary priest. The city is a historic place with beautiful architecture and natural surroundings. Both visitors and locals can have an entertaining time there.

Despite being a small town with a peaceful atmosphere, the community of Goliad always has something going on. Boasting a long list of nearby amenities and a downtown composed of one-of-a-kind boutiques and shops, the city has a unique flair and delightful personality. It is surrounded by rolling hills that the San Antonio River passes through, allowing residents the pleasure of fun outdoor recreation, from exploring the parks to fishing in the river.

Goliad Market Days is downtown’s open-air market held on the second Saturday of each month. For more than 25 years, vendors have lined the streets and surrounded the square. It is one of South Texas’ most popular and largest street markets.

Deborah’s Kitchen Table serves southern cuisine made from scratch every day. From the delicious, large meals to the fast and courteous southern service, it is an excellent experience. The restaurant is inviting and well-lit, with a friendly atmosphere.

Featuring high-top tables, lounge areas, and bar seating, Commercial Street Bar & Grill is a traditional restaurant with delicious food. It has a vast selection of beer, liquor, wine, and margaritas. A great place to relax; the service is attentive and welcoming, and guests can enjoy music from various bands and DJs.

With friendly, quick, and efficient service, Rudy’s on the Run Pizza and More is a hidden gem in the town. The menu is extensive, combining American cuisine with Tex-Mex fare, serving everything from seafood to enchiladas to, of course, pizza. Decorated simply, the atmosphere is casual and friendly.
 

Things to Do

A nine-hole golf course for all experiences and skill levels, Goliad Golf Club, features a swimming pool, covered patio, and clubhouse, in addition to golf. The fairways and greens are beautiful, and the staff is attentive and friendly.

Markethouse Museum is a small museum with a collection of historical items from the surrounding areas. From photos to exhibits, it is a place to learn more about local history from friendly guides. Some items include a usable typewriter, the original Model T owner’s manual, and a pre-electricity X-ray machine.

Fannin Battleground State Historic Site honors the soldiers who fought during the Texas War for Independence in 1836. The Battle of Coleto Creek began the battle cry of ‘Remember Goliad,’ spreading the Texas cause. The memorial boasts an interpretive exhibit, picnic area, group pavilion, and a tall stone obelisk on the site's 14-acre grounds.

A former Spanish Army stronghold in the 18th century and another battleground of the Texas Revolution, Presidio La Bahia State Historic Site boasts informative, friendly tours. Between the museum areas, beautiful chapel, and videos, it is highly educational. There is also a reenactment weekend when visitors can interact with the reenactors and enjoy candle-lit tours, history lessons, and more.
